Protection begins the moment an original work is created and fixed in tangible form, whether or not it's ever registered. What registration adds is an official, dated public record that is far easier to rely on in court than trying to reconstruct proof of authorship after a dispute has already started.
Filing under the wrong category causes most delays
A logo isn't filed the same way as a photograph, and a film isn't filed the same way as its soundtrack — each category has its own form details and supporting documents. Applications filed under the wrong category, or missing a required NOC, are the single biggest cause of avoidable objections and delay.
Software copyright doesn't require your entire codebase
Applicants sometimes assume the full source code has to be disclosed publicly to register software copyright. In practice, extracts — commonly the first and last pages of code — are submitted, and sensitive portions can be requested to be treated as confidential by the Copyright Office rather than made part of the public record.
An unregistered assignment can be unenforceable
Transferring copyright ownership through an informal email or verbal agreement often isn't enough to hold up if challenged later. A properly drafted and, where relevant, registered assignment deed is what makes a transfer of ownership or an exclusive licence genuinely enforceable against third parties.
