Understanding ICEGATE

What is ICEGATE, and why does it matter for your shipment?

ICEGATE — the Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway — is the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs' online platform for filing shipping bills, bills of entry, and other customs documents electronically.

The gap between IEC and customs clearance

Holding a valid Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT lets you legally import or export — but it does not, on its own, let customs process your paperwork. Every shipping bill (for exports) and bill of entry (for imports) is filed electronically through ICEGATE, and that filing is only possible once your IEC has been separately registered and linked on the ICEGATE portal.

Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons first-time exporters and importers see their cargo held at port — the IEC is valid, but customs has no electronic profile to process the filing against.

01

Electronic filing

Shipping bills and bills of entry are submitted and tracked entirely online.

02

Bank-linked

AD Codes tie each port registration to your foreign exchange account.

03

Digitally signed

Filings require a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate mapped to your profile.

04

Document-linked

e-Sanchit stores and indexes the supporting paperwork for each shipment.

Documents needed for ICEGATE registration

Having these ready before filing begins is the single biggest factor in staying inside the 3–5 working day timeline.

Valid IEC certificate

Issued by DGFT, in the name of the registering entity.

PAN & GSTIN of the entity

Matching the name and address on the IEC.

AD Code letter from your bank

Issued on bank letterhead for each port to be registered.

Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate

In the name of the authorised signatory (we arrange this if you don't have one).

Authorised signatory's ID & address proof

PAN card and Aadhaar or passport of the person operating the ICEGATE profile.

Board resolution / authorisation letter

Authorising the signatory to operate the ICEGATE account, for companies and LLPs.

How Registration Works

Five stages, 3–5 working days, start to finish

01

Verify Documents

IEC, PAN, GSTIN and AD Code details are checked against DGFT and bank records.

02

Create ICEGATE Profile

Your ICEGATE account is created and linked to the IEC and signatory credentials.

03

Map Digital Signature

A Class 3 DSC is mapped so shipping bills and bills of entry can be signed electronically.

04

Register AD Code Per Port

The bank's AD Code is registered against every port you intend to ship through.

05

Set Up e-Sanchit & Go Live

Supporting documents are indexed on e-Sanchit and the profile is ready to file.

Common Point of Confusion

ICEGATE registration vs. IEC — what's the difference?

Both are required, but they serve different purposes and come from different authorities.

ICEGATE Registration Walkthrough — Step by Step

Our compliance team walks through document verification, ICEGATE profile creation, digital signature mapping, AD Code registration, and e-Sanchit setup — the same five stages covered in the How It Works section above.

Transcript: This walkthrough explains ICEGATE registration in five stages. First, we verify your IEC, PAN, GSTIN and AD Code documents against DGFT and bank records. Second, we create your ICEGATE user profile and link it to your IEC. Third, we map a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate to that profile so shipping bills and bills of entry can be digitally signed. Fourth, we register your bank's AD Code against every port you intend to ship through, since customs requires a separate AD Code registration per port. Fifth, we set up e-Sanchit, indexing your supporting trade documents so they are ready to attach to filings, after which your ICEGATE profile is fully live.

Why Legalkarobar.com

Registration that accounts for what happens after go-live

Many ICEGATE registrations are filed correctly but fail at the first shipment because a port wasn't registered, a DSC expired, or e-Sanchit wasn't linked. We build the profile around your actual shipping plan, not just the paperwork.

Every port mapped up front

We register AD Codes for all ports in your shipping plan in one pass, not one at a time after a shipment gets stuck.

DSC issuance handled in-house

No separate vendor hand-off — Class 3 DSC procurement and ICEGATE mapping happen as one coordinated step.

Compliance calendar after go-live

DSC renewal dates and AD Code changes are tracked so your ICEGATE access never lapses mid-shipment.

What businesses say after registering

Our first container was booked before the AD Code registration was even mentioned to us elsewhere. Legalkarobar.com flagged it early and had all three of our ports covered before we shipped.

Textile Exporter
Owner, Garment Manufacturing Unit, Tiruppur

We'd been importing under someone else's customs broker code for a year. Getting our own ICEGATE profile registered properly cut clearance delays almost immediately.

Electronics Importer
Director, Consumer Electronics Trading Firm, Delhi NCR

The digital signature mapping was the part we kept getting wrong on our own. Having it bundled into the registration instead of a separate vendor saved us real time.

Handicrafts Exporter
Partner, Home Décor Export House, Jaipur
Frequently Asked

ICEGATE registration questions, answered

ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway) is the customs department's portal for filing shipping bills, bills of entry, and other trade documents electronically. Any importer, exporter, customs house agent, shipping line, or airline handling customs-cleared cargo in India needs an ICEGATE registration linked to a valid IEC before goods can be cleared through customs.
Yes. The IEC is issued by DGFT and is the basic license to import or export. ICEGATE registration is a separate, subsequent step that links your IEC to the customs department's electronic filing system, without which customs cannot process your shipping bills or bills of entry even though your IEC is valid.
The Authorised Dealer (AD) Code is a code your bank assigns for foreign exchange transactions tied to your export-import account. Customs requires this AD Code to be registered separately against each port through which you plan to ship goods, since remittances for that port are routed and verified against the registered AD Code.
A complete ICEGATE registration, including digital signature mapping, IEC linking, and AD Code registration at your chosen ports, typically takes 3 to 5 working days once documents are in order. Filing at additional ports later is usually faster, around 1 to 2 working days per port.
Yes, a Class 3 DSC in the name of the authorised signatory is required to digitally sign shipping bills, bills of entry, and other customs filings on ICEGATE. Legalkarobar.com arranges DSC issuance and mapping as part of the registration if you do not already hold a valid one.
Yes, a licensed customs broker or freight forwarder can be registered on ICEGATE with role-based access to file on behalf of an importer or exporter, provided the client authorises this through the appropriate customs power of attorney and the broker holds a valid customs licence.
Without ICEGATE registration, shipping bills or bills of entry cannot be filed electronically, so customs clearance for that shipment will be delayed or blocked entirely, even if the goods are export or import ready and the IEC is valid.
Yes. Businesses shipping from more than one port, or operating under more than one IEC across group entities, can have all registrations coordinated together so AD Codes, digital signatures, and e-Sanchit access stay consistent across every port and entity.
